[NEWS] AT&T launches 5G service in Cleveland, Akron

AKRON, Ohio – On the heels of Verizon launching 5G cellular service in Akron, rival nationwide carrier AT&T announced Monday it has launched 5G service in Cleveland, Akron and Lorain.

AT&T’s 5G will be available to customers who have a 5G-capable device and compatible plan, the company said in a statement to cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer.

On Friday, Verizon launched its “5G Ultra Wideband” service in Akron, after having expanded the network in the Cleveland area earlier this year. AT&T has previously announced plans to launch 5G service in Cleveland this year, but as of Friday, the AT&T coverage map did not indicate that 5G was available in Cleveland or Akron.

AT&T said Monday its coverage map is currently being updated to show the 5G availability in the Cleveland-Akron-Lorain metro area.

“5G will lead to faster speeds, lower latency and enhanced capacity – enabling new experiences for our customers across Northeast Ohio,” the company said.

5G is the so-called fifth-generation of cell phone technology that promises faster speeds than 4G LTE networks. The new high-speed networks are built on much smaller cells than older cellular systems, allowing customers to quickly download and stream movies and TV shows and to videoconference in near-real time.

​

Some industry experts view 5G as a potential cord-cutting option for households that now get broadband, phone and TV via cable or satellite.

For 5G service, an AT&T customer must have a 5G-capable phone and an unlimited plan, which starts at $35 per month. Verizon’s unlimited plans with 5G also start at $35 per month.
